The official handbook

Life in the United Kingdom: A Guide for New Residents is the official source for every test question. Prices vary:

  • Paperback: around £12.99 new (often £8-10 second-hand)
  • Digital / eBook: around £9.99
  • Audio CD: around £19.99

The handbook is not strictly required to take the test, but it's worth having since every question is drawn from it. Our free study guide covers the same material.

Travel to the test centre

There are around 30 test centres across the UK. Most candidates can find one within a 1-2 hour journey. Factor in train/bus/petrol and possibly parking on the day.

Practice test materials (optional)

You can practise free with us, or pay for one of the apps and books on the market. Most paid practice products are £4-15. PassTheUKTest is currently free for an unlimited mock and chapter-by-chapter practice.

Total cost for ILR / citizenship

The Life in the UK Test is one step in a much larger application. Here's where the £50 fits into the total cost:

For Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR)

Life in the UK Test£50
English language test (if required)£150-200
ILR application fee (main applicant)£2,885
Biometric enrolment£19.20
Total (approximate)£3,100+

For naturalisation as a British citizen

Life in the UK Test£50
Citizenship application fee (adult)£1,500
Citizenship ceremony fee£80
Biometric enrolment£19.20
Total (approximate)£1,650+

Application fees are set by the Home Office and change annually — check GOV.UK for current figures before you apply.

What if I fail and have to retake?

You pay the full £50 each time. There's no discount or "second attempt" rate. You also have to wait at least 7 days between attempts.

Some quick maths:

  • Pass first time: £50 total
  • Pass second attempt: £100 total
  • Pass third attempt: £150 total

This is the single biggest reason to prepare properly. Spending 5-10 hours of focused practice can save you £50-£100 in retake fees.

Can I get a refund?

You can usually rebook for free if you cancel more than 3 days before the test. If you cancel within 3 days, or fail to turn up, the £50 is lost.

Refunds are not given because you failed, changed your mind, or found out you didn't actually need the test.

Is it worth paying for practice?

For most candidates, no — there are good free resources, including this one. Pay-only practice apps tend to charge £4-15 and often offer no significant advantage over free options that have a decent question bank.

The main thing that affects your pass rate is volume of practice, not the brand of the practice product. If you take 5-10 mock tests and review your mistakes, you'll pass — whether it cost you £0 or £15.

Money-saving tip: sign up free with us and aim for 22+ on three consecutive mocks before you book your real test. That's the cheapest insurance policy against a £50 retake.
